While Balavihar aims to mold young children by laying the foundation for a fulfilling life based on spiritual and ethical values, it is equally important for adults and parents to have an understanding of those same values, so that they can continue to reinforce them in their children at home and/or enrich their own lives. So if you are an adult who is looking for spiritual advancement or merely curious about the knowledge that our ancient culture discovered and treasured for thousands of years, Chinmaya Mission Orlando offers several options for you. The following are some of the lectures, study groups and activities that are conducted at our premises on Balavihar days and are meant for adults. This page describes the topics at a high level. For each topic, the actual content and the timing of the event may vary from year to year (for example, the specific Upanishad or Bhagavad Geeta chapter that is currently being studied may vary). Please click on our Sunday Schedule page for more information.

Upanishad (lecture)

Upanishads are found in the ending portions of the Vedas and describe pure knowledge, as opposed to the rituals that are formulated in the earlier sections. Each of the four Vedas has a selection of Upanishads and they all broadly convey the same message although they may use different metaphors and examples for the same. This lecture is conducted by Acharya Shailaja Nadkarni.

Bhagavad Geeta (lecture)

Bhagavad Geeta is called the 'divine song of life' since it contains practical teachings for making our lives happy and fulfilled. In contrast to the Upanishads, whose messages can seem cryptic and abstruse at times, Geeta delivers its lessons in simple language and using examples that all can relate to. This lecture is conducted by Acharya Shailaja Nadkarni.

Bhagavad Geeta (study group)

This is a study group as opposed to a lecture, which means that participants are encouraged to study the selected verses themselves and having reflected upon them, share their own understanding and thoughts thereof. Note that one need not have any prior knowledge of the Geeta to join a study group, nor is it mandatory for participants to speak. Swami Chinmayananda's excellent commentary on the Geeta (available in our bookstore) contains a detailed explanation of each verse, so that provides a starting point for anyone to explore further on their own and then share their thoughts. Study groups are usually divided into small groups, with each group being moderated by a Chinmaya Mission sevak. Each session begins with the groups conducting discussions on their own. Later, all the groups converge for final thoughts and clarifications under the guidance of Acharya Shailaja Nadkarni.

Meditation

Group meditation sessions are led by Acharya Shailaja Nadkarni.

Hatha Yoga and Pranayama

Simple Asanas and Pranayama techniques are taught by Shri Nitin Kapur.
